Oval Gilded Frame
The small oval frame, found in a barn, was severely warped and previous structural repairs had failed. The frame housed an old pastel of historic importance, so it was very important to restore the frame and devise a way to re-house the pastel. The frame joinery was re-adhered and gaps adjacent to the break lines were filled with a paste epoxy. In order to house the pastel properly the upper and lower sections of the rabbet were filled, with a carvable paste epoxy, to create a planer contact surface for the glazing. Loses of composition ornament were replicated and adhered to the sight edge. Finally, the frame was re-gilded overall to integrate the new components and restorations.
