The graduate students at the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation (WUDPAC) developed a blog series during the COVID-19 shut down (April/May 2020) titled “Attics and Basements and Closets, Oh My!” Each student was assigned a topic to help families learn how to better care for their family treasures.
Sometime late in the day of April 27, 2011, an EF4 tornado devastated portions of the city of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The subsequent restoration of a circa 1835 secretary, damaged as a result of the tornado, is a testament to the fascinating, although terrible, characteristics of these weather events.
The question may seem silly at first read, but consider the increasing perfection of three- dimensional computer-generated objects. Why do we revere art and craft? Why do we venerate it by putting it in museums, in galleries, and in our homes? Why has so much time and treasure been allocated to creating incredible masterpieces of architecture, paintings, drawings, sculpture, furniture, literature, and music throughout human existence?
