Custom Housing

Custom Housing

While conservation treatment is our primary focus, HCS, LLC will assist with housing your object(s) for display. We can provide traditional matting & framing options when necessary. However, there are occasions when items require special housing or modification of existing frames to properly support awkward structures that are warped or distorted. We have modified the rabbets of frames to support warped and irregularly curved panel paintings. Custom housing is also available for architectural materials in wood or other material.

Matting & Framing

For items that have an existing frame, HCS, LLC can provide preservation rated window mats and backing boards and replace glazing materials. Fragile items that are not currently framed, can be mounted and housed in acid and lignin free window mat with backing boards that can be taken to a framer for the final frame and glazing. When possible we try to use mounting options that do not require adding hinges or other attachments to the artwork. However, we also will apply Japanese paper hinges with wheat starch paste when appropriate.

HCS, LLC  offers a limited number of custom moulding options that are either gilded or depending on the wood choice, French polished. Alternatively, we can work with you to create a reproduction frame that is appropriate to the period of your artwork.  We also work with local artisans who can create reverse painted glass mats and French mats.

The American Institute for Conservation has created a brochure with matting and framing recommendations that you can provide to your framer that is available for download as a PDF file on their website.

Encapsulation

It may not always be appropriate or necessary to frame your items. Encapsulation between archival (inert) polyester film is another option to safely house an item.
