Nineteenth Century Chair
In the mid to late nineteenth century, very high quality “reproduction” furniture was made to fulfill a demand for the earlier styles. Often this furniture, know as second period work, is mistaken for first period manufacture. This chair is probably English and dates from the ‘second period.’ The laminated splat was fractured in several places. Extant parts were re-adhered, an area of loss was restored by replicating the missing section. The restoration and extant fragments were adhered to the splat with hide glue and gaps at the break lines were filled with paste epoxy. Finish work was performed to blend restoration materials with shellac, alcohol soluble dyes and dry pigments. The surfaces were cleaned and waxed.
